Why Would You Need a Root Canal?

A person will need a root canal treatment once their tooth’s pulp becomes irritated, inflamed, or infected. While deep decay is a common reason for tooth pulp damage, it can also happen because of repeated dental procedures, large fillings, or trauma to the face.

Some of the common signs you might need a root canal include the following:

  • Extreme sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Severe pain when chewing

What to Expect During the Procedure

Before beginning root canal therapy, we will numb the area around the tooth we’ll be working on to minimize discomfort. Once you’re numb, we will drill an access hole at the top of the tooth to remove the damaged pulp. We’ll then thoroughly clean the inside of the tooth to ensure the infection is completely gone before filling and sealing it. You may need to schedule a separate appointment for a dental crown to protect your tooth and restore it to its full function.

  • Maintain excellent oral health
  • Avoid hard foods
  • Wear a night guard, especially if you have bruxism
  • Wear a mouth guard during contact sports
