When is Gum Sculpting Necessary?

This treatment can be used for more than cosmetic purposes. Gum sculpting might become necessary to treat gum disease and possibly save a tooth from receding gumlines. This treatment may also be performed in conjunction with other periodontal procedures.

Common Causes of Uneven Gums

Many factors can contribute to having gums that sit too low or too high. Unfortunately, some of these causes can be out of our control. However, gum sculpting is an excellent solution for evening them out. Below are some of the common reasons you might have uneven gums.

What to Expect

Your gum sculpting procedure will take place in our office, and you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area we’ll be working on. If you have a “gummy” smile, we will use a scalpel or soft tissue laser to remove excess gum tissue and re-sculpt the gumline to show more of the tooth. If your gums are receding, we will need to remove tissue from another area of your mouth to lengthen and restructure your gumline.

After your surgery, you should limit your activities, eat soft, cool foods, and follow instructions for brushing your teeth during the healing process.
